Hey, I'm Alex Standerfer — owner and operator of Hide A Way Home and Haul.
I've been working on and around the water since I was 16. My first real job was building docks for Fort Fremont Marine in Wisconsin — loading barge sections, getting in the water to set legs, doing the kind of physical work most people twice my age would've passed on. I did it for two years and loved every minute.
From there I took my skills south to North Carolina, where I worked as a marine technician at Perth Marine — diagnosing electrical issues, doing engine maintenance, restoring flooring, working on all kinds of boats. I also spent two years competing in collegiate bass fishing, which taught me a different kind of discipline: prepare everything, adjust fast, and show up ready no matter what the conditions are.
Before starting Hide A Way Home and Haul, I was working right here in the area at local property services work in Benzie County in Beulah — performing boat winterizations, shrink wrapping, dock removal, and commercial and residential snow plowing. I already knew this community and this work. Starting my own company was the natural next step.
I'm Mercury and Yamaha outboard certified, which means when I'm winterizing your boat, I actually know what I'm looking at. That's not something most property service companies in Northern Michigan can say.
I landed in Frankfort after living in Wisconsin and North Carolina, and this is where I want to be. The lakes, the community, the people — it felt right. I started Hide A Way Home and Haul to build something real here and take care of people's properties the way I'd take care of my own.
